Microsoft Azure AI platform

Project overview

My employer Terawe Corporation at that time was working with the Microsoft Azure team on a web page dedicated to their Azure AI platform.

I took this contract role to create this page with Terawe's team and part of the Microsoft Azure team.

My role

UX/UI design,
product thinking

Tools used

Pen & paper, Photoshop,
Illustrator and InVision

The team

Project manager,
Sr. designer and me

Project duration

7—8 weeks

The challenge

This AI platform project with Microsoft Azure team started before I joined this team. There is also a good amount of domain knowledge involved in this project. I spent a lot of time reading meeting notes and project requirements in the beginning to make sure I'm up to speed.

The Solution

Communication is the key.

1. To understand everyone’s perspective and what I can contribute to making my team excel in this project, I check-in with my senior designer and PM regularly.
2. My team set up weekly check-ins with stakeholders on the project.

Persona

Due to limited user research information, I conduct a few user interviews to build my personas. And using them help me to navigate through different design phases.

Result

About two weeks after AI platform page was published, my team received information about how public view this page. The AI platform page has gained its viewers since the first day it went live.

It was no surprise to me that heat map showed an F reading pattern on AI platform page. However, My team was not very much involved with the user testing for this page.  I wish my team had some time to spend on testing this page, understanding what the potential users think about this AI platform page.

Retrospective

Communication

Make sure communicating with your stockholders, manager, and teammates is something critical during the whole process. In this particular project, I worked with some coworkers in India. One of them is our senior designer, so almost every day I write him a brief email about how far is my work and what's new with the project.

Design

It was an enriching experience to work with a senior designer on this project. He had more than six years in this field. And he shared many of his insights with me about how to choose a color theme, different layouts and more.
It's been a while since I started taking online courses on the side, but I have to say this project showed me when it comes to short deadline what you can do to improve your design.

Presenting

As a designer, how you present your work matters. My senior designer walked me through what documents need to deliver. In this step, I learned to create a presentation for stakeholders, design documents for other designers and design specification for developers.
As a UX designer, this showed me every person in your client team could have different needs too. Finding the right balance helps the project to succeed.

Suggestion

The two things I wish I could done with this project:

  • Usability testing
  • Add a sub-navigation for this page

The animation below explains my plan for adding a sub-navigation. This AI platform page has good amount information.  When it comes to a new user, it might not be apparent for the user where they're looking. By adding a sub-navigation (the blue group of words on the left of this image), user is likely to find where they are or what information they're interested.
